Why Does My Acupuncturist Look at My Tongue?

One of the questions I hear often from my patients is:

“Why are you looking at my tongue? What can you possibly see?”

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the tongue is like a little window into what is happening inside the body. It gives us clues about your overall state of balance and helps us understand patterns that may be contributing to how you feel.

When I look at your tongue, I’m not just looking at whether it is pink or red. I’m observing its color, shape, size, moisture, coating, cracks, and markings. I also notice whether certain areas look different from others.

What can the tongue tell us?

In Chinese medicine, different areas of the tongue are traditionally associated with different systems of the body. The front relates more closely to the Heart and Lung systems, the middle to the Stomach and Spleen, and the back to the Kidney and Bladder systems. The sides can also give us information related to the Liver and Gallbladder.

For example, a tongue may appear very pale, unusually red, swollen, dry, cracked, or have a thick coating. These findings don't diagnose a disease by themselves. Instead, they become pieces of a larger puzzle.

I combine what I see on your tongue with your pulse, symptoms, health history, digestion, sleep, energy, emotions, and other observations. Together, these clues help me identify your individual TCM pattern and choose an acupuncture treatment that is specific to you.

Your tongue can change

What I find especially fascinating is that the tongue is not necessarily the same from one visit to the next. Its appearance can change over time as your health, lifestyle, stress levels, digestion, hydration, and overall balance change.

That is one reason your acupuncturist may ask to see your tongue again, even if we have been treating you for a while. We are looking for changes and observing how your body is responding.

So, the next time I say, “Let me see your tongue,” you’ll know why. 😊

It may seem like a simple part of your acupuncture visit, but in Chinese medicine, your tongue can tell us part of your story.

And my job is to put all the pieces of that story together, to better understand you, not just your symptoms.

To your health!
